St John “Jock” Horsfall and the St John Horsfall Trophy

St John Ratcliffe Stewart Horsfall, better known as Jock Horsfall, was a British racing driver and wartime hero, whose legacy continues to be celebrated both in motorsport and military history. Born in 1910, Horsfall became closely associated with Aston Martin, the marque with which his name remains most famously linked.
A talented amateur driver, Horsfall began racing in the 1930s and quickly made a name for himself in British motorsport. His mechanical sympathy and courage behind the wheel stood out, particularly in Aston Martin machinery. Among his notable achievements was his participation in the 1938 RAC Tourist Trophy, and later, the 1946 Belgian Grand Prix, where he famously drove solo for the entire 24-hour duration at Spa-Francorchamps—an extraordinary feat of endurance and skill.

Beyond the racetrack, Horsfall played a remarkable and lesser-known role during World War II. He served as a driver and operative for the British intelligence services, including work with MI5, and is believed to have been involved in operations such as Operation Mincemeat and the defense against German spies on British soil. His contributions remain partly veiled in secrecy, adding a layer of mystique to his legacy.
Tragically, Jock Horsfall died in 1949 while competing in the BRDC International Trophy race at Silverstone. He lost control of his Aston Martin at high speed, marking a premature end to a life defined by bravery and passion—both on and off the track.

In his honour, the St John Horsfall Trophy was established. This annual race, held by the Aston Martin Owners Club (AMOC), celebrates his contributions and enduring spirit. Traditionally contested by pre- and post-war Aston Martins, the event not only showcases the marque’s rich racing heritage but also pays homage to a man whose dedication to both country and competition made him a standout figure of his era.
More than just a race, the St John Horsfall Trophy is a poignant tribute—an annual reminder of a true gentleman racer whose courage extended far beyond the circuit.
The 75th running of the St John Horsfall Trophy, exclusive to pre‑war Aston Martins, returned to Silverstone on Saturday, 9 August 2025, and was held in collaboration with the Bentley Drivers Club’s annual race meeting.

The grid comprised of 17 pre war Aston Martin cars, dating from 1922 through to 1937.
