Video: JEV and Peugeot looking for strong result

As the sun rose over the paddocks at the Qatar International Circuit, a palpable sense of anticipation filled the air. The 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship season was upon them, and Jean-Éric Vergne, the seasoned French driver, was prepared to face the challenges ahead. Climbing into the cockpit of the #93 Peugeot 9X8 Hypercar, he could feel the weight of expectation resting squarely on his shoulders, but it wasn’t unfamiliar.

Vergne had been here before — the thrill of competition, the roar of engines, the intense focus required to carve out the perfect racing line. Partnered with experienced stalwart Paul di Resta and the promising talent of Mikkel Jensen, the trio formed a formidable team, yet the pressure to produce results was unrelenting.

The season kicked off in Qatar, a race steeped in intrigue and excitement. As the lights turned green, Vergne launched from tenth on the grid, finding an early rhythm among the chaos of overtaking and strategy adjustments. The #93 car, a product of significant innovation and development from Peugeot, was capable, yet still in search of that last punch needed to truly challenge the frontrunners. Due to their great teamwork, Vergne and his colleagues crossed the finish line in ninth place, earning their first points of the season. Although not a podium finish, it was a start, and a foundation upon which a season could be built.

A few weeks later, the team arrived at Spa-Francorchamps, a track that held an almost mythical status among drivers. The undulating landscape of the Belgian circuit presented an opportunity to showcase the Peugeot’s capabilities. In the days leading up to the race, Vergne, as usual, immersed himself in data, seeking those precious tenths of seconds that could mean the difference between standing on the podium and merely watching from the sidelines.

Race day dawned with dark clouds overhead, hinting at an unpredictable weather forecast. Despite the looming threat of rain, the atmosphere within the Peugeot garage was electric. As the race unfolded, Vergne felt a symbiotic connection with the car — every turn, every acceleration, and every braking point flowed with elegance. They fought fiercely, and as the laps wound down, Vergne produced a stunning performance to bring the #93 home in fourth place, just shy of the podium but still a proud achievement.

“This is what we’ve been working for,” he pondered, reflecting on the moments after the race. “We’re getting closer.”

The next few races saw similar performances; solid finishes, top-ten qualifications, but never the breakthrough that everyone craved. The competitions were fierce, with rivals pushing the boundaries of technology and skill. Vergne’s insights and technical feedback were crucial in refining the 9X8, bridging gaps in tire management and performance, but progress came agonisingly slowly.

Then came the race at Fuji, where the team experienced an ecstatic moment of clarity amid the constant grind. The track’s technical challenges allowed Vergne’s adaptability and strategic insight to shine. He and his teammates navigated their way through a thrilling race, showcasing the car’s improvements and resulting in a respectable fourth place yet again.
