This weekend, RacerViews is at Phillip Island for the World SBK Championship opening round.

We caught up with Carlos Checa after qualifying to discuss his pole position and his season’s chances.

Checa has been in the WSBK paddock for a few years now, with his crowning achievement being his Championship win in 2011.  This year, Checa remains with the Ducati with the Alstare team, having swapped from the Althea team that he won the title with.

Checa is also known for his MotoGP exploits, where he won twice from 194 starts.  He also scored 24 podium positions.  He spend much of his time with Yamaha but also raced for Honda and Ducati.

His career almost never was after a crash in 1998 at Doningtion, the suffered near fatal injuries. He crashed at Craner Curves and was initially thought to have suffered only scrapes and bruises before complaining of pain. Hours later he had lost his vision, needed emergency surgery to remove his spleen and was listed in critical condition. He fought back to ride that year, missing just one race.
