Jon McCorkindale and Matt Campbell have taken dominant victories at the penultimate 2014 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia presented by Pirelli round at Queensland Raceway, with the latter securing the Class B title.

Victory for McCorkindale in Saturday’s Jim Richards Endurance Trophy race was followed with wins in Sunday’s two sprint races, securing the New South Welshman his first round win of the season.

The clean sweep was a welcome change to McCorkindale’s season, which only included one round podium finish and three DNFs.

“I couldn’t be happier. We know we are way out of the championship race, Fraser has had a great run this season, so we’ve taken a relaxed approach for the rest of the year and evolved our team and myself as a driver,” said McCorkindale, who was joined on the Class A podium by Fraser Ross and third-placed John Karytinos, who scored his first podium of the 2014 season.

“We’d now love to win six from six for the next round at Phillip Island and finish the season on a high.”

Campbell’s Class B dominance has been one of the season highlights, winning 13 of the 15 races of the season in Class B over the first five rounds, coupled with 14 fastest laps in his class.

The 19-year-old Queenslander sealed the Class B title in style, claiming wins and fastest laps in each of the Ipswich event’s three Porsche races.

“It’s great to get another Class B round win, but to be able to race with the Class A guys on a track like this is even better,” said Campbell, who was joined by Richard Gartner and Brendan Cook on the Class B podium.

“To be able to wrap up the championship with one round to go is awesome. Coming into this year we weren’t sure how many rounds we were going to do, so to secure the Class B title after the fifth round is pretty special.”

Series points leader Ross significantly extended his gap at the top of the Outright and Class A standings after finishing second in each of the Queensland Raceway races. Ross’s nearest championship rival, John Goodacre, shadowed the Victorian in the opening two races, placing third, though failed to finish the final race after sustaining a deflated tyre caused when running wide on the final corner.

The result leaves Ross with an 86 point lead in the Outright standings from Goodacre with 91 points on offer at the Phillip Island season finale. Similarly, Ross holds an 85 point lead in the Class A standings from Goodacre with 93 points available for the remainder of the season.

“I’m happy to come away with second place for the weekend. I’m nearly a round clear in the point from Goodacre, so I have to just keep my nose clean and get the job done at Phillip Island,” said Ross.

Campbell is untouchable in the Class B standings, placed 173 points ahead of Tim Miles and Gartner (both on 255 points) in the standings with 93 points available at Phillip Island.

Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia presented by Pirelli will return at Phillip Island on September 20-21 for the season finale.
