We talk to Caitlin Wood, the only female in the Bathurst 12 Hour field

Share

Young Australian driver, Caitlin Wood will line up in Class C at this weekend’s Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hours. As the only female on the grid she will hold a special place in this year’s race. Caitlin will line up in am M-Motorsport KTM Crossbow alongside Justin McMillan, David Crampton and Timothy Macrow. The GT4 field is the strongest it has ever been with the KTMs having to fend off entries from BMW, Porsche and Ginetta.

Caitlin has ambitions to reach Le Mans one day and spent her 2017 season racing in Blancapin with an aging Lamborghini Gallardo R-EX. She raced alongside former F1 driver and sportscar star Tomas Enge in the Lamborghini Young Star Drivers team. Her best result of the season was a third place in the ‘Silver Cup Category’ at Misano.

Caitlin Wood will race at Bathurst after a successful year in the Blancpain GT Series

Michael Ford: I am here with Caitlin Wood with the KTM Crossbow – welcome to Bathurst.

Caitlin Wood: Thank you very much

Prefer to listen, you can do so here

MF: You have been on the simulator, looking forward to getting out there for real?

CW: Of course. Unfortunately I have never done Bathurst before so it will be my first laps in a race car around here this weekend which will be busy. Doing it with the KTM will be special and really good for me as I know the KTM well from racing with Reiter overseas.

I am the only female on the grid of 170-something driver which is also a bit special. It is also a little sad as I would love to see more of us out there! I am really excited for the weekend and hope I can get a good result with my teammate. I have a good team behind me with M Motorsport, so it will be good.

MF: Last year was a good year for you, racing in the Blancpain Sprint Series with a Lamborghini Gallardo (!). Come here with a GT4 spec Crossbow, how much of a difference is that for you?

CW: It is a big difference. The Gallardo has the R-EX engine in it so it is much more powerful. With the GT4 car, it is a turbo engine so it is less power, and we do have BoP this weekend so we have quite a bit of weight on the car which does change the handling of the car quite significantly.

It will be interesting to see how it handles over the top – with the extra weight it should sit flatter but we would like to take a bit out if possible – as anyone would!

MF: Best of luck – keep it straight and fight to the last hour!

CW: That’s it, thanks!

She will be racing for the M Motorsport KTM team
