The Africa Eco Race continues to deliver exhilarating moments and fierce competition as we dive into the riveting details of Stage Three, where competitors faced a grueling 546 km course that showcased the breathtaking landscapes of Erg Chegaga. With 452 km of timed sections connecting Tagounite to Touizgui, this stage was nothing short of a test for endurance and skill.

Motorbikes: Jacopo Cerutti Takes the Lead

In the motorbike category, Italian rider Jacopo Cerutti on his Aprilia Tuareg emerged victorious, not only claiming the stage win but tightening his grip on the overall standings. Cerutti finished ahead of Yamaha’s Alessandro Botturi by a solid margin of 3 minutes and 19 seconds, while Francesco Montanari, also riding an Aprilia, secured the third podium spot, trailing over 22 minutes behind.

The drama unfolded as the battle among these Italian riders intensified, especially with Botturi left as Yamaha’s sole contender after Pol Tarres withdrew from the race. Norwegian Pål Anders Ullevålseter made a notable rise to fourth place in both the stage and overall standings, showcasing the competitive spirit that defines this rally.

Jacopo Cerutti declared after his victory, “A good stage for me but very physically demanding; you can’t sit on the bike for more than three seconds—it’s an extremely challenging terrain.” Riders like Guillaume Borne shared their struggles, battling through back pain and navigation errors, yet still finding joy on the course.

Cars: Benoit Fretin Strengthens His Dominance

In the car category, Benoit Fretin (Century CR6) showcased incredible performance yet again, winning the stage while embodying the true spirit of camaraderie that rally-raid is known for. He stopped to assist an injured motorcyclist, waiting for medical help and ensuring the rider was safely evacuated before continuing his race. This act of solidarity speaks volumes about the rally community.

Fretin now commands the overall standings with a significant 25-minute lead over Vincent Vroninks (Red-Lined VK56), who took third place in the stage, and Tomas Ouředníček, who secured second position in his Toyota Hilux.

“This stage was fantastic! The dunes were challenging, but the Erg Chegaga area was a highlight,” commented Ouředníček, reflecting on the captivating landscapes and his navigator’s skills.

Trucks: Gerrit Zuurmond Continues His Reign

Truck driver Gerrit Zuurmond continued to dominate the category, seizing the stage win by an impressive two-hour margin over William Van Groningen. With Zuurmond now leading the overall standings by nearly two hours, he reinforces his status as a top competitor.

Historic Category: Eric and Tom Clayes Maintain Their Lead

Eric and Tom Clayes in their Toyota Land Cruiser 73 kept their lead in the Historic category, outpacing Kurt Dujardyn/René Declercq in a Bombardier Iltis and Fabrice and Magali Morin in a Toyota. All crews relished the diverse terrains and stunning landscapes of this stage, highlighting the rally’s unique challenges.
