A Thrilling Day at the Dakar: Drama, Dominance, and Determination

From the skies, today’s special stage traced a captivating route from west to east, cutting through the provinces of Al-ʿUla and Ha’il. Spanning 428 kilometers, the stage promised a mix of speed and strategy. On closer inspection, the course revealed its challenges: a blend of swift sandy tracks and rugged, volcanic terrain that demanded precision and caution. For the riders and drivers navigating the rocky formations below, the landscape alternated between imposing and inviting, offering no clear path forward. The final stretch, littered with large gravel, tested both navigation skills and tire management.

Mastering the Stage

Luciano Benavides delivered a flawless performance, clinching victory on two wheels and marking his return to the spotlight after a two-year drought. Meanwhile, Seth Quintero edged out Nasser Al Attiyah by a razor-thin one-second margin to claim his second win of the week. Quintero’s victory wasn’t just about speed; a penalty for Al Attiyah tipped the scales in the American’s favor.

Key Moments in the Rankings

Motorbikes: Benavides shone, while Adrien Van Beveren, despite a penalty for speeding, climbed to fourth overall. Daniel Sanders retained his commanding lead, heading into the rest day with a 6′52″ buffer over Tosha Schareina and a 17′38″ margin over Ross Branch.

Cars: After a challenging day yesterday, Al Attiyah bounced back, regaining ten crucial minutes on his rivals—only to lose it again due to a penalty. Henk Lategan still tops the standings, with Yazeed Al Rajhi trailing by 10′17″ and Mattias Ekström 20′54″ behind. Yasir Seaidan grabbed his first-ever Challenger class win, proving his determination to make an impact.

Performance of the Day: Quintero Strikes Back

A few days ago, Nasser Al Attiyah teased young Seth Quintero, suggesting experience trumped youth in the Dakar. Today, Quintero fired back in the best way possible—by beating Al Attiyah by one second in a dramatic finish. The 22-year-old Californian, already a standout with 20 Challenger class stage wins under his belt, is proving he’s no rookie. With his sights set on a Tuareg Trophy, Quintero’s rapid rise suggests he might not have to wait until he’s 40, like Al Attiyah, to claim the ultimate prize.

W2RC: Learning from the Masters

Despite setbacks in the general rankings, Quintero’s focus has shifted to stage points. With two wins and a podium finish so far, he’s accumulated 14 points—mirroring the tally of Yazeed Al Rajhi at this stage last year. Drawing inspiration from veterans like Al Attiyah and Rajhi, Quintero is poised to capitalize on every opportunity in the second half of the race.

Dakar Classic: A Battle for the Ages

The Dakar Classic continues to build its legacy, with Carlos Santaolalla and Lorenzo Traglio locked in a fierce duel. Santaolalla, with 11 stage wins, faces a determined Traglio, who added another to his tally yesterday. The battle for supremacy remains intense, as these drivers etch their names into Dakar history.
