Milton Keynes, UK – Red Bull Racing confirms that Christian Horner will step down from his role as Team Principal and CEO, marking the end of a remarkable 20-year tenure that delivered 6 Constructors’ Championships and 8 Drivers’ titles.

The decision follows a period of strategic review and internal reflection, as the team prepares for significant regulatory changes in the 2026 Formula One season.

Performance Concerns and Organisational Shift

Recent results have fallen short of expectations, with Red Bull currently placed fourth in the 2025 Constructors’ Championship. Consecutive underperformances at Austria and Silverstone have intensified scrutiny and prompted leadership to assess the team’s competitive direction.

In parallel, the departures of key personnel, including Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey and Sporting Director Jonathan Wheatley, have highlighted internal tensions. Red Bull acknowledges the need for a cohesive leadership structure to navigate the road ahead.

Reputational Challenges and Cultural Reset

Earlier this year, Horner faced allegations of inappropriate conduct. While an independent investigation cleared him of wrongdoing, the episode had lasting reputational implications and impacted internal dynamics.

The team remains committed to fostering a transparent and inclusive culture, aligned with the values of its drivers, staff, and global fanbase.

Driver Stability and Future Planning

Max Verstappen, under contract through 2028, remains a central pillar of Red Bull’s long-term strategy. As speculation around potential performance-based exit clauses grew, the organisation took proactive steps to reinforce its commitment to a winning trajectory and retain its leading talent.

Looking Ahead: New Leadership for a New Era

With sweeping regulatory changes due in 2026—introducing lighter cars, updated hybrid power units, and enhanced electrification—Red Bull is resetting its leadership for the next generation of competition.

Laurent Mekies, former Racing Bulls Team Principal and ex-Ferrari Sporting Director, has been appointed CEO and Team Principal of Red Bull Racing with immediate effect. Mekies brings a wealth of experience and is tasked with redefining the team’s competitive edge in the evolving Formula 1 landscape.

A Farewell and a Legacy

Christian Horner addressed Red Bull Racing staff at the team’s headquarters on Wednesday, 9 July, describing the decision as unexpected but acknowledging the need for organisational evolution. He will remain on gardening leave until the end of 2025.

Horner’s leadership saw Red Bull rise from a fledgling team to a modern-day powerhouse, guiding the likes of Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen to World Championship glory.
