Robby Gordon’s Eagle is pulled into pit lane

I remember watching the 1999 Marlboro 500 from Fontana.  It was a time that CART seemed to be super popular – on the surface beating out the IRL threat.  But that wasn’t the case, underneath the series was in a world of hurt and a world of greed.  That, though mattered for nothing of that fateful day.  The 31st of October 1999 will be remembered for one thing.  The passing of Greg Moore.  The Canadian was involved in heavy crash on lap 9 and died, aged 24.

It is hard not to see that crash when remembering the race.  But there was a race that happened.  It was won by Adrian Fernandez and Juan-Pablo Montoya won the title on count back from Dario Franchitti.  RacerViews photographer, Steve Sziklai was in the stands on that day and provided us with these pictures.
