It was one of those rallies where an opportunity came for Kris Princen to take the win. He may not have been the fastest on the day. If Vincent Verschueren hadn’t gotten a 30 second penalty, Princen would have been a comfortable second.
But Verschueren did get a penalty – a 30 second one.
Verschueren fought back setting a string of fastest stage time and it set up a grandstand final loop. Princen had a small lead – but was overhauled with just one stage to go.
The gap was under a second. There was everything to play for.
Set up changes in the final service had worked for Princen but he still needed to drive a near perfect final stage – the 12.38km Horpmaal test.
Conditions were cold and windy. Though in a special event for the Belgian Rally Championship‘s visit to the Rally van Haspengouw, it was dry.
As the times came through, Kris Princen put in his time of 6:10.8. Verschueren came in at 6:12.2. The rally was Princen’s.
