We now look at the recent Pomeroy Trophy, as Silverstone and The Vintage Sports-Car Club kick off their 2024 seasons respectively.

The Grand Prix circuit at Silverstone played host at the weekend to the historic Pomeroy Trophy, a legacy that began under the visionary Harry Bowler in 1949 and debuted on the racing calendar on 22 March 1952.

Celebrating the machines that have graced the roads and racetracks for decades, The Pomeroy Trophy pays homage to that spirit with a competition unlike any other. A challenge that brings together the elegance of pre-war craftsmanship and the innovation of modern engineering in a thrilling battle to find the finest touring car.

The day starts with a series of rigorous tests that not only examine the capabilities of the cars but also the mettle of their drivers.

Test A (The Wiggle – woggle)

A timed slalom test between cones spaced to a strictly defined set of measurements over a quarter mile.

Test B (Breaking Test)

The cars proceed from a standing start (point A) to any top speed that they wish within a marked distance. Then at marked point (B) they must break and arrive with front wheels between two marked points (c and d) this is timed from the point of passing B and arriving at C/D. The test also carries a penalty of 10 marks per occasion that they touch any markers or bollards.

Test C and D (Acceleration test)

Test C is a standing start quarter mile acceleration test, followed immediately by test D which is a flying 250 metres. The tests also carries a penalty of 10 marks per occasion that they touch any markers or bollards.

Test E (High speed trial)

High-speed trial on the grand prix circuit for 40 minutes.

The Pomeroy since its early days has had a requirement that all cars have at least 2 fixed seats and an acceptable hood. In the early 90’s, the need to be able to properly stow two suitcases to FIA measurements for such cars as Le Mans was introduced. Failure to carry a suitcase carries a significant penalty, neither of which can be carried in the front passenger seat.
