It was a perfect day for Ferrari as Charles LeClerc lead a dominating effort for the Italian squad to lead home a 1-2 finish with teammate Carlos Sainz in Austin, TX. LeClerc made most of an opportunity to steal positions at the start when pole sitter Lando Norris and fellow front-row starter Max Verstappen squabbled into turn one, leaving the door open for LeClerc to jump from forth to first in a single corner as Norris fell back behind Verstappen and Carlos Sainz.

From there it was LeClerc’s race to lose as the Monegasque driver expanded his lead quickly over Verstappen, before an unexpected safety car made it’s appearance for the first time since Canada as Lewis Hamilton spun out of turn 19 the same as teammate Russell the day before, beaching his Mercedes in the gravel and forcing his first DNF at Circuit of the Americas.

With the field gathered and the safety car in pit lane, LeClerc unleashed his Ferrari once again and remained unchallenged for the remainder of the race, sealing the victory comfortably 8.562s ahead of teammate Carlos Sainz – who’s perfect pit timing allowed him to jump Verstappen during the middle stint of the race – as Verstappen took third ahead of a frustrated Lando Norris.
Oscar Piastri ended the race fifth, largely unnoticed as he stayed away from any trouble unlike sixth place finisher George Russell, who started from pit lane after repairs from yesterday’s crash prevented him from being able to make the start of the race. Russell, starting plum last, made his way through the field despite an early time penalty for forcing Valtteri Bottas off track.
Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg battled through much of the race to finish seventh and eighth, an excellent result for the Haas team on home soil, as rookie Liam Lawson, in his first start back in Formula 1 since his stint replacing Daniel Ricciardo in 2023, finished a respectable points-scoring ninth as the Williams of Franco Colapinto would go on to finish out the top 10.
With the constructors championship fight tightening, only 48 points separate McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari as the Maranello-squad look to mount an attack for the title in the final five races in 2024. Formula 1’s penultimate triple header sees team head south of the border to Mexico City for the 20th round this year as we visit the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez for the 2024 Gran Premio dela Cuidad de Mexico.
