The FIA announced that it is launching a tender process for promoting the FIA World Rallycross Championship starting in 2025. This offers an opportunity for a new promoter to enhance the category and engage automotive manufacturers globally.
Since its debut in 2014, World RX has provided thrilling racing and maintains a strong competitive scene, with a loyal fan base hungry for more content. However, the transition from the RX Promoter follows significant challenges, including a massive manufacturer withdrawal due to a poorly managed switch to electric power units under IMG’s promotion, leading to IMG’s exit from a 20-year deal.
The WRC Promoter took on these responsibilities under difficult circumstances, including the COVID-19 pandemic and technical issues with the cars, such as a fire involving Lancias at Lydden Hill. These factors have complicated rebuilding the grid.
The FIA’s tender outlines goals for new promoters, focusing on growth markets like India, China, North America, and the Middle East and increasing fan engagement both digitally and on-site. Sustainability is a priority, with rules creating a unique competition between internal combustion engine and electric vehicles, reflecting modern automotive trends.
WRC ditches hybrid for 2025
The upcoming promoter will build on the progress made during the 2024 season, where both types of cars won races, to ensure World RX meets the needs of current teams and attracts new interest.
This is a crucial time for the sport, especially with the FIA’s launch of an affordable cross-car program aimed at fostering growth and participation in both traditional and emerging markets in the years ahead.
