For the second time in 2024 Oscar Piastri is a race winner as he claimed victory over polesitter Charles LeClerc on the streets of Baku Sunday afternoon. With an aggressive overtake that saw Piastri steal the lead from LeClerc, the McLaren driver held on to the lead as LeClerc struggled to put his Ferrari into a DRS window to complete a pass back for the victory.
Behind them, Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz made ground for a multi-car battle in the closing laps before the pair crashed out on the penultimate lap, forcing the race to end under a virtual safety car and promoting George Russell to a surprise third place.
HIGHLIGHTS: Relive the action from Baku as Piastri takes exhilarating victory in dramatic fight for the win
With the 4th victory for McLaren this year, the papaya-colored team leapt to the top of the Constructors Championship, usurping Red Bull in the process, for the first time since 2014 as Red Bull remain winless since the Spanish Grand Prix.
Meanwhile, Lando Norris salvaged a positive result after starting 16th on the grid with the McLaren driver overtaking championship rival Verstappen in the closing laps to finish 4th. Norris also secured the fastest lap of the race, further digging into the gap to Verstappen as only 59 points remain between the pair.
Despite crashing out with Sainz, Sergio Perez looked to be back on form as he outperformed Verstappen for almost the entire weekend as a podium spot was achievable until the contact with the Ferrari that saw both drivers DNF. The inconsistency of the Red Bull proved to be a problem for Verstappen as he was much of a non-issue for the front running Ferrari and McLaren drivers.
Fernando Alonso had an unassuming drive as he finished his day 6th while the Williams team had their own banner day with both drivers finishing in the points. The 10 points collected by Albon and Colapinto for their 7th and 8th place finishes propelled the team to 8th in the constructors fight, pushing Alpine down to 9th overall.
Not to be outdone, Oliver Bearman set his own record as well becoming the first driver to ever score points for two different teams in his first two starts in Formula 1 as he took his Haas machine to 10th place, scoring a single point for the team as they edged within 5 points of the RB team for 6th in the Constructors fight.
And with that, teams will begin the final stretch of fly away races as the Singapore Grand Prix inches closer in 1-weeks time. RacerViews coverage of the 2024 season will continue as we race under the city lights for one of the hottest grand prix’s of the season.
