There was a sense of anticipation surrounding the reborn BRDC Classic. Following the end of the Silverstone Festival format, many wondered whether a return to a more traditional historic racing weekend would succeed. The answer, after three days at Silverstone, is a resounding yes.
The biggest change was philosophical rather than cosmetic. Instead of trying to be a family entertainment festival with historic racing attached, the BRDC Classic unapologetically put motorsport at centre stage. The result was an event that felt authentic, focused and unmistakably British.
From the moment the gates opened, the emphasis was clear. The paddocks were alive with mechanics working on priceless machinery, drivers mingled freely with spectators, and the soundtrack was exactly what enthusiasts had hoped for—everything from pre-war racers to thunderous GT cars and Formula One machinery stretching the vocal cords of naturally aspirated V8s and screaming DFVs.
The headline additions, GP Icons and Endurance Icons, justified the hype. Rather than static demonstrations, they delivered competitive racing featuring some of the most evocative machinery ever to grace Silverstone. Seeing generations of Grand Prix cars attacking Maggotts, Becketts and Stowe was a reminder that these cars were built to race, not simply to decorate museums.
Away from the circuit, the atmosphere had changed noticeably. The overwhelming commercialisation that had gradually crept into previous festivals had been dialled back. Trade stands were relevant, car club displays once again felt like an important part of the weekend, and the emphasis returned to enthusiasts rather than casual festival-goers. It was refreshing to wander through rows of beautifully presented classics before returning trackside for another packed race schedule.
That isn’t to say the event lacked broader appeal. Families were still well catered for, food options remained plentiful and the facilities benefited from Silverstone’s modern infrastructure. But everything supported the racing rather than distracting from it.
Perhaps the greatest success was the pace of the weekend. With around twelve hours of competitive racing spread across three days, there was very little downtime. Whether watching Historic Formula Junior, GT3 Legends, touring cars or the spectacular GP Icons races, there always seemed to be another reason to find a place on the banking.
The paddock accessibility also deserves praise. Historic motorsport has always thrived on allowing fans to get close to the machinery, and the BRDC Classic retained that openness. Drivers chatted with spectators, restorers happily explained engineering details, and photographers found countless opportunities impossible to experience at modern Formula One events.
No event is perfect. The revised format inevitably meant fewer of the music acts and lifestyle attractions that had broadened the audience during the Silverstone Festival years. Some visitors may miss those elements, and attendance appeared more enthusiast-focused than family festival-oriented. For many long-time supporters, however, that is precisely what made the weekend work.
Ultimately, the BRDC Classic feels less like a replacement and more like a restoration. It recaptures the character that made the original Silverstone Classic one of Europe’s premier historic motorsport events while introducing fresh headline categories that ensure it remains relevant rather than nostalgic.
Silverstone has rediscovered what made this weekend special in the first place: magnificent racing cars, unrestricted access, knowledgeable fans and a circuit steeped in history. Sometimes progress means remembering what worked all along.
The BRDC Classic is a confident, enthusiast-led revival that puts historic motor racing back where it belongs—at the heart of one of the world’s greatest racing circuits. If this inaugural edition is a sign of things to come, Silverstone has created a worthy successor to one of Britain’s most cherished motorsport weekends.
