Coffs Harbour local, Nathan Quinn made his WRC debut at the Coats Hire Rally Australia in a Motorsport Italia run Mini Cooper WRC. Quinn has competed in the Australian Rally Championship and Asia Pacific Rally Championship had ambitions plans to be the first Australian to run in a WRC car in Australia since Chris Atkinson’s run in a Subaru in 2006.
Quinn worked long and hard to get the funding and contacts together to make this ride happen. Once he did, he enjoyed very minute. His times were consistent and he never once bent the car – meaning that at the end of every stage, he would coming in with a beaming smile. In the end he finished 8th, ahead of Kalim Al-Qasimi and Kris Meeke – after the latter crashed – twice.
At the beginning of his career, he worked multiple jobs to feed his passion for rallying, something that again came through in this rally as he worked with his DMack tyre engineers to fit his own tyres in his locally based Goodyear Tire and Auto shop.
Over the past couple of years, he has competed in his own ‘Coffs Coast Rally Team’ Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX in the Asia Pacific Rally Championship, achieving a class win and outright podium at the 2012 Malaysian Rally. His efforts at the Coats Hire Rally Australia will now see him in the WRC record books with Championship points and a solid result.
In this interview we talk about the effort it took him just to get to the start line, his rally experience and his future plans.
