We see many great battles on track and two of the greatest battlers on track were Alain Prost and Alan Jones.  In 1981, Jones was the defending Champion, where Prost was just starting out yet to take any of his four F1 championships.

Come the German GP and the infamous Hockenheimring, the two were engaged in a titanic battle for supremacy.

The thing was, they had two totally different cars.  The French Renault of Prost had a turbo had a 90degree V6 turbo, where the Williams had the Cosworth DFV – a normally aspirated V8.

The differences meant that on the straights, the Renault could pass the Williams with ease, where in the corners, the superior handling of the Williams with its ground effect could repass the Renault.

It made for one heck of a battle.

For the record, Nelson Piquet’s Brabham went onto win with Prost second and Jones in 11th a lap down.  But who remembers that?

Here is that battle – Prost vs Jones.
