The Dakar is almost here.  After our story on the Eco Africa Race, we thought we should profile the Dakar.

The Rally this year starts at Rosario in Argentina on January 5th and snakes it way through Argentina, through Bolivia and into Chile, finishing at Valparaiso on January 18.

The field has all the names we have come to expect – Stephane Peterhansel, Nasser Al-Attiah and Nani Roma in the Minis, Robby Gordon’s Hummer, Carlos Sousa’s Haval, Ginel De Villiers’ Toyota and Carlos Sainz’s Buggy.  There are around 150 cars but the bikes aren’t to be out done with about 50 Quads and almost 200 two wheeled machines.

Naturally, KTM are the favourites again with Marc Coma, Jordi Viladoms and Fransisco Lopez leading the charge.  Yamaha though have re-upped their campaign, taking on defending winner Cyril Despres to rally alongside Oliver Pain.  Honda are back with Helder Rodrigues and Paulo Gonvalves.

Finally there is the truck section where Kamaz have dominated of late.  The Russian trucks led by Edward Nicolev will be up against the De Rooy Ivecos and Tatra led by Martin Kolomy.  They are joined by competitions with Mans, Ginafs and Liaz.   75 trucks will take to the start line.

We will bring you updates of the rally over the course of the event.
