Picking up where he left off in China, Max Verstappen topped the first practice session in Miami ahead of Saturday’s 2nd Sprint Shootout of 2024. Teammate Sergio Perez topped much of the session until the Dutchman set a 1:28.595s lap time on the soft compound tire near the end of the session.
Oscar Piastri – running a partial upgrade package – lapped his McLaren just behind the Red Bull at the end of the session, dropping the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz to third.
A Tribute to Ayrton Senna
The hour long session was briefly delayed by the stranded Ferrari of Charles LeClerec. In a scene cut from “Austin Powers”, LeClerc spun his car perpendicular to the racing line and was unable to back his car out of the predicament, leading to a red flag period while recovery crews collected the “blue” Ferrari.
