Lewis Hamilton topped the first practice session in the streets of Monaco ahead of the McLaren of Oscar Piastri and teammate George Russell as Red Bull suffered yet another dismal practice session hampered by poor handling and pace.

Verstappen, winner in Imola just a week prior, was on a knifes-edge throughout the session, at times coming close to impacting the walls at the exits of several corners, especially Sainte Devote and Tabac.

While Verstappen came close, Zhou Guanyu did hit the barrier in Sainte Devote, sending debris across the circuit to be collected by the Ferrari of Charles LeClerc. The track went red to clean up the debris, interrupting the runs of soft tires that saw Hamilton set his quickest lap just prior while Piastri, who appeared to be quicker, ended 0.029s behind Hamilton as it seemed he lifted prior to ending his lap.

Zhou clips the barriers to trigger red flag in first practice

Lando Norris and LeClerc rounded out the top 5 as with the latter having set his quickest time on the Medium compound. Aston Martin ended 6th and 7th on the day with the RB duo right behind, as Carlos Sainz rounded out the top 10.

Teams will regroup as the second practice session kicks off at 17:00 local time.
