Free practice one started off wet as teams braved through a delayed start on the first day of running at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. With morning rains saturating the track with water and hail, officials elected to delay the opening of pit exit but still started FP1 as scheduled as marshals worked to clear the track of standing water.
Once teams began to run on the quickly drying track, it was Lando Norris who topped the timesheets ahead of the Ferrari pair of Carlos Sainz and Charles LeClerc at the very end of the session with a 1:24.435s lap as Sainz and LeClerc hit traffic. With only 30 minutes of running teams will be pressed for time during the second session later this afternoon to prepare their cars for tomorrows qualifying session.
2024 Canadian GP FP1: Zhou hits the wall to trigger red flag in first practice
Three drivers failed to set times as Alex Albon stayed in the garage while Jack Doohan, filling in for Esteban Ocon for one of his rookie FP sessions, completed a lap but was not timed. Zhou Guanyu also failed to set a lap time as his Kick Sauber aquaplaned through turn 5 and impacted the wall, ending his day and bringing out the only red flag for the session.
Action starts again this afternoon at 17:00 local time for the second practice session here in Canada.
