Off the back of a near-win in Canada, Lando Norris came out swinging in the first practice session in Spain as Formula 1 starts the first weekend of the European triple-header swing. The McLaren driver topped Max Verstappen’s quickest time that held through much of the session, finishing 0.024s from the Dutchman.

Verstappen held the top spot for most of the early afternoon session despite suffering from clutch issues in the latter half of running. Behind him, Carlos Sainz ended his session third ahead of George Russell and Sergio Perez – who also suffered issues with his Red Bull’s throttle pedal.
The session was briefly interrupted with a short red flag period as marshals recovered debris from the track that came off the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso.
