Oscar Piastri claimed his first victory in Formula 1 this afternoon in Hungary despite intra-team drama that threatened his chance at a maiden win, as teammate Lando Norris strung out team orders to allow the Australian driver to retake the position as race leader. The McLaren duo ended up 1-2 on the day for the first McLaren 1-2 race finish since Daniel Ricciardo’s 2021 victory ahead of Norris in Monza.
HIGHLIGHTS: Enjoy the action from a controversial Hungarian GP as Piastri claims maiden F1 victory
An excellent start off the line wasn’t enough for Norris as Piastri and Verstappen quickly caught the polesitter and pushed on to make it 3-wide entering turn one, with Norris on the losing end as Piastri leapt into the lead as Verstappen took a wide, off-track line to claim second place. After several laps of chatter, Verstappen was asked to relinquish the position to Norris in order to prevent a possible penalty from race control.
As Piastri controlled the race with Norris second, pit stop sequences began to unfold as a myriad of strategies saw drivers and teams badgering one another over the decisions being made. Verstappen and Norris, in particular, were at the forefront of the messages as team drama unfolded live via world broadcast.
Norris would be the primary point on contention as during pit stops, his McLaren was brought in first as an attempt to hold off Lewis Hamilton from overtaking but in the process Piastri was dropped down from first to second behind Norris, who comfortably pulled away from his younger teammate. With the team pressing Norris via radio lap-after-lap, it wasn’t until 2-laps remaining that the Briton slowed on the front stretch to allow Piastri to reclaim the lead. No doubt this will be a point of discussion for the tea in the coming weeks.
Lewis Hamilton also set his own personal record this weekend as the seven-time champion scored his 200th podium in Formula 1 as he finished third ahead of Charles LeClerc and a frustrated Max Verstappen. Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez, and George Russell – the latter two having jumped from 16th and 17th on the grid for a point finish – would take spots 6th through 8th, while Yuki Tsunoda and Lance Stroll would round out the top 10.

Formula 1 heads to the longest track on the schedule for the final race before the summer break as drivers look to claim victory in the hills of the Belgian Countryside. Situated in the Ardennes Forest, the Circuit Spa-Francorchamps is home to one of the longest running and most popular events on the Formula 1 calendar. With massive elevation changes and high-risk, high-reward corners, the 4.317mi circuit is a driver and fan favorite.
