Pierre Gasly lead the final practice session this morning as the Alpine driver lead rival Kevin Magnussen and Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas as a heavy crash by Logan Sargeant disrupted the session.
With the mixed conditions retuning back to soaked and sodden, teams were eager to see how the track has changed overnight as Nico Hulkenberg and teammate Magnussen were first to jump on track with wet weather tires. Oscar Piastri became the first of the drivers to test out the intermediate tires as the McLaren driver lapped nearly 15 seconds slower than the quickest time in the dry FP2 session.
Hulkenberg, issues persisting, came over the radio soon after Piastri’s slip-and-slide lap to complain about the braking issue his Haas continued to display, leading the German driver to lock-up under braking and into the barriers for second time in as many days.
HIGHLIGHTS: Watch the action from a disrupted FP3 in Zandvoort as Sargeant suffers dramatic crash
Although making a visit to the barriers would lead to further damage for the Haas team, it was Logan Sargeant who would bring out the main event as the American driver dipped his Williams onto the grass exiting turn 3, spinning the Williams around violently as it slid into the barriers and erupted in flame as it came to a stop in the middle of the circuit. Sargeant was quick to exit the destroyed vehicle and red flags flew as marshals worked to recover the debris and extinguish the flames
The red flagged session meant that drivers would return to the circuit with only two minutes remaining in hopes they could snag a quick lap with the brighter conditions as Gasly went quickest from Magnussen and Bottas. Lando Norris put his McLaren in 4th ahead of Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon. Piastri, Stroll, Hulkenberg, and Sainz would round out the top 10
Qualifying is up next as Max Verstappen looks to remain perfect at home, tuning at 15:00 local time for all the action.
