Friday afternoon’s second practice session ended with five drivers all within three tenths of a second from one another as George Russell set the pace from Oscar Piastri and Lewis Hamilton.
Unlike the early afternoon’s mixed practice, drivers were keen to explore the track in much drier and brighter conditions as the wind still remained a steady adversary around the twisting confines of Zandvoort. Much the topic of the day, the wind would prove to be a worthy challenge for drivers as Russell and Verstappen both experienced their own lock-ups and snap-oversteer moments.
However, it was Nico Hulkenberg who would find the limit and then some as the rear of his car came out from under him, sending the recently updated Haas into the barriers in turn one, prompting the sessions only red flag period.

The track returned to green-flag conditions with about 40 minutes remaining as drivers ran qualifying simulations on the soft compound tires as Verstappen, and then Norris, went quickest. Piastri – still recovering from injured ribs during the summer break, lowered the benchmark yet again before being surpassed by Russell and nearly Hamilton as the session came to a close.
Following the top 5, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso made his first appearance in the top 10 for the weekend as Yuki Tsunoda, Kevin Magnussen, Charles LeClerc, and Alex Albon completed the top 10.
