Risking it all for the glory of winning in front of the Tifosi, Ferrari and Charles LeClerc succeeded Sunday afternoon, riding a one-stop strategy to LeClerc’s second victory in 2024 and his second win at the Temple of Speed since 2019 as McLaren’s botched strategy calls late in the race allowed Ferrari to steal victory from the Woking squad.
With the majority of the field opting for a two-stop strategy, LeClerc and Sainz quickly adopted the high-risk one-stop in an effort ot pull out track position from McLaren, resulting in both cars running at the front of the field in the latter stages of the race.
Although Sainze was unable to prevent Piastri and Norris from passing him, LeClerc’s lead gave him enough space to bring home the win ahead of Piastri, who was 2.664s back in second place while teammate, and last weekends winner, Norris, finished 3rd ahead of Sainz.
HIGHLIGHTS: Catch the action from Monza as Leclerc takes fairytale victory over McLaren
On a day that seemed set for another Norris victory and McLaren 1-2, Norris was forced to settle for 3rd after a quick battle on the opening lap with Piastri saw him once again lose the lead before the end of the first lap. Although he took the fastest lap of the race, Norris and McLaren will be asking themselves “what if” after poor strategy and inter-team battling lead to another lost race.
Mercedes endured another lack-luster race after several positive weekends, seeing Lewis Hamilton in 5th and George Russell in Seventh, as Max Verstappen and Red Bull had one of their worst races of the season as Verstappen finished 6th ahead of Russell and teammate Perez.
Elsewhere, Alex Albon had a successful day finishing 9th for Williams while rookie Colapinto ended 12th in debut. Kevin Magnussen finished 10th after a time penalty that will also see him banned for the next round in Baku as he has achieved the 12 penalty points needed to assume a one-race ban. This will be the first ban in Formula 1 since Romain Grosjean in 2012.
Fernando Alonso finished where he started in 11th, just missing out on 10th with Magnussen’s time penalty, while Ricciardo, Ocon, and Gasly finished 13th-15th, respectively. Valtteri Bottas ended 16th for Kick Sauber ahead of Nico Hulkenberg, who lost seven spots on the day, as Zhou Guanyu and Lance Stroll rounded out the finishing drivers. Yuki Tsunoda was the only retiree from the race, having dropped out after contact with Nico Hulkenberg.
After the first double header back from the summer break, teams will head to the streets of Baku for the Azerbajian Grand Prix. Check out everything live at 13:30 local time on Friday, September 13th.
