For the second weekend in a row it’s Lando Norris on pole as the McLaren driver dropped in a spectacular pole lap ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri and Mercedes’s George Russell. Although initially claiming provisional pole after the first runs in Q3, Norris further improved his time at the checkered flag with a gap of 0.109s ahead of Piastri as the leading six cars were all blanketed by less than two tenths of second.
HIGHLIGHTS: Watch the qualifying action at Monza as Norris claims spectacular pole in McLaren 1-2
Q1 Results:
In front of the home crowd it was Ferrari who were amongst the first to hit the track when the lights turned green, the cheers of the hometown Tifosi echoing along the main straight as Ferrari looked to secure a top starting spot for Sunday. However, it was Lando Norris who would lead the way after several botched laps from Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri as the Briton cleared LeClerc by just over a tenth of a second midway through the session.
Further down the order, Sergio Perez was once again under pressure to miss making Q2 as the Mexican driver sat in P19, well off the pace of the top 10. With a fresh set of rubber, Perez was soon able to remedy this, going 9th fastest as the session ended. Rookie Colapinto, in his first ever qualifying session, would go on to exit early after a strong FP3 as he out qualified the Kick Sauber duo of Bottas and Zhou.
Drivers out in Q1:
- 16th: Yuki Tsunoda (RB)
- 17th: Lance Stroll (Aston Martin)
- 18th: Franco Colapinto (Williams)
- 19th: Valtteri Bottas (Kick Sauber)
- 20th: Zhou Guanyu (Kick Sauber)
Q2 Results:
A short delay for gravel cleanup started the second qualifying session as Carlos Sainz led the field out to the circuit as teams began using the ever effective aero-tow in the first few laps.
Norris went quickest again after the first set of runs as he led teammate Piastri by only eight hundredths of a second with Max Verstappen third fastest behind the pair.
With fresh tires though, Mercedes soon formed a formidable challenge with Hamilton emerging on top of the time sheet, though the margin was a narrow 0.086s over Norris. With all to play for, the second runs would be for all the marbles as everyone, save for Sainz and Norris, returned to the track for one last attempt. However, none were able to challenge for the top slot as Fernando Alonso found himself on the outside looking in as he missed Q3 by only a hundredth of a second.
Drivers out in Q2:
- 11th: Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin)
- 12th: Daniel Ricciardo (RB)
- 13th: Kevin Magnussen (Haas)
- 14th: Pierre Gasly (Alpine)
- 15th: Esteban Ocon (Alpine)
Q3 Results:
With the top-10 shootout underway it was Alex Albon who hit the track first as McLaren and Mercedes put the tow into play for the initial runs. Meanwhile, Ferrari split themselves with Verstappen as Carlos Sainz was cited for a potential unsafe release. As the first runs came in, Lando Norris led the way over teammate Piastri as Mercedes slotted in 3-4 and Ferrari 5-6.
Shockingly, it was Verstappen who found himself on the back foot as he ended the initial runs in P8 behind teammate Perez. With both Red Bulls entering their final runs, Verstappen was unable to mount a significant charge, only improving himself to seventh and pushing Perez back to P8.
Once again, on the final run it was Norris who stayed on top ahead of Piastri as George Russell pushed his Mercedes ahead of the Ferrari’s at the line, elevating himself to P3 for the Sunday’s race start as teammate Hamilton was relegated back to P6 ahead of Verstappen.
With the grid set for Sunday, will Ferrari be able to bounce back for the victory at home, or will McLaren dominate again as Red Bull’s struggles continue. IT’s lights out at 15:00 local time, tune in for all the action then.
