For the first time in his career, Lando Norris won from pole and led every lap as he dominated his way to victory in Singapore. With an over 20 second gap to second place finisher Max Verstappen and over double that to teammate and third place finisher Oscar Piastri, the McLaren driver cut further into the championship lead of Verstappen as the team strengthened its hold on the Constructors Championship.
With Verstappen breathing down his neck, questions lingered on the grid regarding Norris’s poor race start record, having lost the lead on the first lap in every pole he’s recorded. However, that was quickly laid to rest as the McLaren driver blitzed off the line ahead of Verstappen, leaving the squabbling for position to the rest of the grid as they dove into turn one.
HIGHLIGHTS: Catch the action from the Singapore Grand Prix as Norris secures dominant lights to flag victory
Despite a few moments – including one where he nearly binned his McLaren into the wall – Norris drove a flawless race as he nearly claimed his first grand slam, only being denied the fastest lap by Daniel Ricciardo on the final lap of the race. Verstappen, meanwhile, had his best race result since finishing second in Zandvoort, as the Red Bull team has no response to McLaren’s pace on Sunday.
The relatively processional race also broke a running Safety Car record, as 100% of races up to 2024 held on the Marina Bay Circuit had at least one SC period. With the only retirements being pit-lane stops, the 18 finishers largely stayed out of trouble in a clean, but somewhat boring race.
Further down the grid, Ferrari managed to improve their finishing positions relative to where they started as Charles LeClerc gained 4 positions to end his day fifth as Sainz ended up seventh, sandwiching a frustrated Lewis Hamilton between the pair. The Mercedes driver started third on the grid, but a poor tire strategy saw him slap back as he lost places to Piastri, teammate George Russell, and LeClerc.
Fernando Alonso finished in a quiet eighth to continue adding to Aston Martin’s points tally while teammate Stroll improved to finish 14th after starting 17th, a minor victory for the struggling Canadian. Haas’s Nico Hulkenberg started sixth on the day and finished ninth in a strong showing for the team as Sergio Perez rounded out the top 10 with a single point for the Red Bull squad.
Outside the Norris victory, the story and the eyes of the media were all on Daniel Ricciardo. With rumors of RB sending him off after the race in what would be his final grand prix in Formula 1, the paddock was a buzz with interviews with the Australian driver as everyone attempted to figure out where he was going and who would be replacing him. As of writing, the rumor mill points fingers to Liam Lawson as Ricciardo’s replacement starting in the next round at Circuit of the Americas, but nothing has been formally confirmed by the team or drivers.
A four week break greets drivers and teams before the final stretch of races this season. We’ll see everyone back in action the weekend of October 20th at Circuit of the Americas.
