Friday running in Austin came to a conclusion this afternoon as Max Verstappen stole pole for Saturday’s Sprint Race in Austin, TX from the Mercedes of George Russell by 0.012s. With the current Championship leader looks to correct course on what has been a rough and difficult second half of 2024, Verstappen’s only lap in SQ3 put the Red Bull team back on pole for the first time since Austria.
Sprint Qualifying Highlights: 2024 United States Grand Prix
Russell, having set his lap early on in the final session, nearly held on to pole as both Ferrari’s failed to challenge for the top spot, despite strong running during the early afternoon practice session. Lando Norris also failed to challenge, settling for forth on the grid between LeClerc and Sainz.
The two surprise moments of the day came via Oscar Piastri and Sergio Perez. Piastri, having made it comfortably into SQ2, was the victim of track limits violations and had his quickest time deleted, demoting the lone Australian to 16th for Saturday’s Sprint. Perez however, was unable to avoid the drop zone and fell to 11th after a quick lap from the RB of Yuki Tsunoda bumped the struggling Red Bull driver out of the top 10 once again.
