Cars hit the track for the first time in three weeks under the lights in Las Vegas as Lewis Hamilton topped the time sheets from teammate George Russell and McLaren’s Lando Norris in an all-British lockout to end FP1. With cooler temperatures thanks to the dark, Nevada desert, drivers were quick to get going on the temporary street circuit that greeted them with slippery and dusty conditions.
HIGHLIGHTS: Hamilton and Russell lead the field ahead of Norris in slippery FP1 for Las Vegas GP
Championship rivals Verstappen and Norris were among those who found their way down the escape road in turn 14, both drivers vying for a good weekend as Verstappen looks to clinch his forth title.
As the session hit the halfway mark it was Hamilton that led the way from Russell and Norris as drivers began the change over to soft tire compounds. Norris quickly lowered the benchmark ahead of the Ferrari pair of LeClerc and Sainz as Verstappen sat behind in sixth, the Red Bull struggling for pace on the long straights of the Vegas Strip. Not long after, Mercedes switched Hamilton and Russell to soft tires as the pair traded fastest laps before the session ended.
The dominant 1-2 finish for the session put the paddock on focus as Mercedes’ newfound pace stunned many, with Hamilton nearly a second quicker than Norris in third. LeClerc ended the session in forth ahead of Verstappen and Carlos Sainz, while Fernando Alonso, Oscar Piastri, Pierre Gasly, and Sergio Perez finished out the top ten positions.
Free Practice 2 kicks off in a few hours time as teams will battle colder conditions under the floodlights along the strip. Stay tuned as we cover the first race of the final three rounds of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship.
