Czaj going through turn 1 at Phillip Island in race two.  Engine problems in that race would put him out of the weekend’s action

In our continuing QBE Australian Superbike Championship coverage from Queensland Raceway we catch up with a friend of RacerViews, Phil Czaj (for those wondering, you pronounce it chai – like the tea).

Phil is racing in the Prostock category in 2013 on board an Aprilia RSV4.  Coming to racing later in life – i.e. not when he was 8 (in his 20s I believe) he has been gaining valuable experience in the Championship this year.   He has been setting competitive times and beating personal goals as he aims high in his racing career.

He came to the national series after competing very successfully in the Victorian state titles.  He and the Czaj Racing Team run on shoestring budget, with all family resources going to getting the bike on track.  For a team on such a small budget, they have presented an immaculately turned out bike.  Being the only Aprilia on the grid, it also makes a great addition to the mix of Kawasakis, Hondas and BMWs.

Phil was having a strong weekend when we talked to him, after his first race.  Setting strong times on a new track, he was setting himself up for strong runs in the second and third races.  Unfortunately in the second race, his Aprilia engine did not agree and let go on the front straight.

Something like this is devastating for a team like Czaj Racing and it may put an end to their 2013 adventures – as they will have to put their money set aside for racing just to get the bike back on track.

So if you have a few grand spare, been wondering what to sponsor or have that pesky Aprilia engine sitting round that you just didn’t know what you were going to use it for, call the Czaj’s – they (and the fans) could use it.
