Two and half years. 945 days. That’s how long it’s been since Lewis Hamilton Last stood on the top step of a Formula 1 podium, but that all ended Sunday as the seven-time champion hoisted the winners trophy in front of the home crowd for the ninth time at Silverstone. Winless since Saudi Arabia 2021, Hamilton came into the race as a favorite despite qualifying second behind teammate George Russell.
Race Highlights: 2024 British Grand Prix
The looming threat of rain and potential mixed conditions materialized in perfect harmony for Hamilton as he took control of the race during the final round of pitstops and never looked back, beating a charging Max Verstappen to the line by 1.465s for his 104th career win and becomes the first driver to ever win a race after his 300th career start.
In addition to his ninth victory at home, Hamilton became the first driver to ever win nine times at a single event, breaking his tie with Michael Schumacher in the process and cements him in the record books alone at the top. Following Hamilton an Verstappen was the lightning quick McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, the former being considered by many as the favorite for the victory, but a botch pit strategy left him and Piastri vulnerable as the race shifted from wet to dry in the second half.
Carlos Sainz finished a respectable 5th after nearly challenging for a podium against Verstappen, as Nico Hulkenberg followed suite in 6tth place – the best finish of the year for Haas. Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso would go on to finish 7th and 8th as Alex Albon and Yuki Tsunoda rounded out the top 10.
Further down the field it was a forgettable race for Charles LeClerc and Sergio Perez. LeClerc, starting 11th, finished a miserable 14th as Ferrari’s aggressive strategy to move him to intermediate tires several laps too soon failed to materialize, leaving the Ferrari driver a sitting duck as he finished a lap down to the leader, sandwiched between Daniel Ricciardo and Valtteri Bottas. It wasn’t much better for Perez either as the Mexican driver, who started from pit lane, finished a lowly 17th and 2 laps down from Hamilton and teammate Verstappen. Since signing a contract extension in early June, Perez has finished no higher than 7th – which occurred in Austria a week prior – and has scored only 11 constructors points to Verstappen’s 61. With a two week break until the Hungarian Grand Prix, who knows how things will shake up in Red Bull come the end of the summer break.
