Max Verstappen and Red Bull returned to their winning ways in as the Dutch driver took advantage of a fortunate safety car to win his sixth race of the 2024 season. McLaren’s Lando Norris, who looked on pace to win in the early stages of the race, was unable to mount a significant challenge to Verstappen and ended his day 2nd after starting 3rd on the grid. Polesitter George Russell rounded out the podium in a stellar driver that saw him overtake teammate Lewis Hamilton in the final laps to deny Hamilton his first podium of 2024.
IGHLIGHTS: Relive the action from a dramatic Canadian Grand Prix as Verstappen takes victory ahead of Norris
Starting second alongside George Russell, Verstappen was unable to mount a charge during the early phases of the race as the Mercedes driver outpaced the Red Bull in the wet conditions and soon found himself at the mercy of a hard charging Lando Norris as the McLaren driver zipped past both drivers to assume the lead of the race. However, an ill-timed safety car – called when the Williams of Logan Sargaent found its way into the barriers – gave an advantage to the Red Bull and Mercedes drivers as Norris was forced to fall in behind the safety car, demoting him to 3rd after his pitstop for fresh intermediate tires.
With Verstappen now back in the lead, followed by Russell, Norris, and Piastri, it was an all out dual between the 4 drivers for the duration of the race as Hamilton attempted to make his claim at the podium.
Further down the field, it was a forgettable weekend for the Scuderia as both LeClerc and Sainz struggled for pace. LeClerc and his team gambled on tires, hoping the wetter weather would materialize, but it was for naught as LeClerc soon retired with power unit issues. Further along in the race, Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon had their own coming together that saw both drivers retire with race-ending damage to their cars.
Following the top three, it was Hamilton, Piastri, and Alonso making up the top six as Lance Stroll, Daniel Ricciardo, and the Alpine duo of Gasly and Ocon rounded out the top 10. Sainz, Albon, Perez, LeClerc, and Sargaent all retired from the race, dropping the Scuderia to 49 points behind Red Bull in the constructors Championship as Alpine jumped Williams for 8th overall.
